What is payment routing optimization?
Payment routing optimization means sending each transaction down the path where it is most likely to be approved, at the lowest cost. The same payment can succeed through one gateway or merchant account and decline through another, because every issuing bank scores traffic differently.
Beast measures approval rates across issuer, BIN, gateway and MID, shows where approvals are being lost, and quantifies what fixing each one is worth. Beast is not a payment processor; it tells you where to route and why, across the processors you already use.
The four dimensions that decide approvals
- Issuer: each bank approves and declines on its own rules. A drop isolated to one issuer is a routing or retry problem, not a traffic problem.

- Gateway: the same card mix approves at different rates on different gateways.
- MID: a merchant account with a rising dispute ratio sees approvals fall before anything else happens.
How the lift is measured
Every routing change is measured against a holdout: a share of traffic that keeps the old path. Reported lift is the gap between the two, so seasonality and traffic mix cannot dress up a change that did nothing. If a change did not work, the numbers say so.
